A couple of years ago one of my daughters suggested this book for me...she said I would like it, and she thought it had been a really good read.
Soooo I bought it, and... it somehow got put on the bottom of a stack of books....and here we are...two years later!
And yes it has been a wonderful read, and a most excellent way to start the summer...and my retirement!
Such.A.Good.Thing.
I really do like a calmer life!
I have a dear friend who does a very good job of living a calm life!
She is an inspiration to me...to know my limits (especially at this age :))!!
To not be afraid to say no!
I will share a couple of wonderful quotes from this very good read...
"To live in contentment means we can opt out of the status race and the maddening pace that is its necessary partner."
"Obviously, there is nothing wrong with having things; it is the inordinate desire, the inner compulsion, the undisciplined craving that is condemned. Covetousness is the idolatrous worship of things."
"...the pace of the modern world accentuates our sense of being fractured and fragmented. We feel strained, hurried, breathless. The complexity of rushing to achieve and accumulate more and more threatens frequently to overwhelm us; it seems there is no escape from the rat race. Christian simplicity frees us from this modern mania. People once again become more important than possessions."
"There is the timid self, the courageous self, the business self, the parental self, the religious self, the literary self, the energetic self. And all of these selves are rugged individualists. No bargaining or compromise for them. Each one screams to protect his or her vested interests. No wonder we feel distracted and torn. No wonder we overcommit our schedules and live lives of frantic faithfulness."
"Once we have understood the mind of our Father, we can speak our yes or no with confidence. The quiet evening can be enjoyed to the fullest because our many selves have been stilled by the still, quiet Voice within...we have heard from the Shepherd. We will have no need to reverse our decision if the winds of opinion change, for we have spoken out of a deeper Reality than the latest Gallup poll."
"We must have a time to still the churning, to quiet the restlessness, to meditate on the Almighty God who dwells in our hearts."
And so many good words on compassion...living simple in order to share more with those in need.
Having a heart for the poor.
